The Internet exploded and images of the tweet and the photo made the rounds, Business Insider reported.
The photo showed a completely nude woman on her back sticking a plane into her vagina.
A customer service representative posted the message in response to a complaint filed online. It was posted online for an hour before being removed.
A representative for American Airlines, which is merging with US Airways, released the following statement. Business Insider posted the statement on its website.
"Our investigation has determined that the image was initially posted to our Twitter feed by another user. We captured the tweet to flag it as inappropriate. Unfortunately the image was inadvertently included in a response to a customer."
